1. How became involved with three orphanages in Haiti?
When the earthquake occurred in January, my wife, who is a yoga instructor, immediately contacted a volunteer organization of international aid to see how she could help. She thought she could be taught yoga to help volunteers to help them cope with stress, children orphaned and the homeless living in tents to help them to heal the mind and body. She ended up staying there for the month of May and has worked with several "tent cities" and orphanages.
She did everything from removing rubble, playing with orphans, teach them to teach yoga to work with the Red Cross and the United Nations. While he was there she got a very special affection for a few orphanages and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who were deliberating opening a school to teach the inhabitants of Haiti to build houses with better resistance to earthquakes. When she returned, she told me that we should organize a trip of voluntary people from San Francisco and surrounding areas to come back and help the orphanages and to make the opening of the school building. We make the trip to be made in October and had 14 volunteers to go to Haiti, practice and teach yoga, volunteering in orphanages and help raise funds to start the school building.
2. Can you tell us about the location of orphanages? They are located in villages or towns? Are in rural areas?
The orphanages are in the rural town of Jacmel, an artistic community, about four hours south of Port-au-Prince. It used to be a tourist destination by the sea, but was heavily damaged by the earthquake. There exist several "tent cities".
3. What is the current status of each orphanage?
One of the orphanage houses, feeds and educates about 82 children and is in the process of building a dental clinic on the property. It is the only dental clinic in Jacmel (the other existing was destroyed by the earthquake) and hope that some of the profit they can make to help fund the orphanage. The clinic will serve the entire city of Jacmel and will work only for Haitians. Some of the funds of the race Misha (Misha's Run) were for supplies for the clinic and spent several days to help Haitians to dig the foundation, put the cement and put rods. They hope to finish the work by the end of the year.
The other orphanage is not yet well an orphanage. It is a large complex, run by a wonderful woman named Bonite Afraine. Every day it opens its doors to 225 children and gives them Lunch is educate them. Many of these children walk more than an hour to get the only meal they have in the day. They do another walk after an hour into their tents where some but not have parents living with children.
Bonite has a strong network of donation in Brooklyn, New York City that sends clothing and medical supplies to help clothe and treat these children when they come in search of scanty meal. She is considered the Mother Teresa of Jacmel. We spent some days in this center to help feed the children, play with them, and help to separate clothing medical supplies. Some of the funds of the Race Misha (Misha's Run) were to repair the ravages of the earthquake and build a shelter for children do not have to eat under the scorching sun. The inside dining room is too small to feed all the children so a third of them lay outside the incredibly hot temperatures. This shelter is now complete, it brought immediate relief to dozens of children. The desire to build an orphanage Bonite is on her property to accommodate some of these children who have no parents. The final destination of the money went to Random Acts of school construction started by an NGO (ACDI VOCA). The school, which serves 40 young men and women who have been orphaned by the earthquake, trains them for four months on how to build homes more earthquake resistance. The Random Acts of money was incredibly well spent there (and that was when he applied most of it). Is being taught to these students real skills with which they can build businesses. In fact, students who began at this time, already have jobs waiting for them when they finish at the end of January. Not only that, but they will build a better future for Haiti with houses stronger. A few weeks before we went there, they asked if we would be able to carry tools in our bags to help students because they had none. So we had each of our volunteers to bring an extra suitcase full of diapers (for the orphanages) to cushion the saws, hammers, props, items of Freemasonry, tapes and other tools. We ended up bringing 340kg of tools in 15 large suitcases. Alvoroçoa was a passage through customs and see their faces when we opened our bags that were filled with diapers and saws. 7. How does the community react?
The community gave us was very supportive and very welcoming. Support was particularly strong for school construction. They even held a ceremony of awards on the opening day of the school where the president of Jacmel congratulated us and thanked us for helping them to open the school. We met with all students who were incredibly grateful.
8. What was your biggest challenge the team faced?
was hard sometimes to see so many children without parents. You enter an orphanage and they literally run for you to hold you (four to five children at a time) because they are severely lacking in physical affection and an orphanage manager can only hug air a number of children per day. Say goodbye to those sweet children was very hard. On the positive side, we see them again soon.
9. What was the impact of cholera on the trip?
Cholera broke out a few days before we left, when floods hit the cities. We have been careful to monitor the health of all.
10. Someone from your group became ill?
All remained healthy.
11. Where did during the trip?
We stayed in two hotels in Jacmel water that were cheap, but nice. They had fantastic food and employees were incredibly friendly. It was good to get back to a comfortable hotel after spending all day playing with the heat children, build the dental clinic or to visit the school building.
12. What materials appeared to be most needed?
Orphanages needed diapers and medicine. The school building needed tools.
13. What else liked children?
They liked being held and we play with them. "Jacks" was a very popular game, and make prayer flags (and paint them).
14. What was the biggest surprise during your trip?
Two things, how the people of Haiti was grateful, optimistic and full of love and how it was easy to make a positive impact on the world through a small donation of our time and money. A person feels incredibly good to be doing well.
15. What is the memory that you'll be more positive from this experience?
for me was seeing the students 40 orphans to smile when they started the first class. It was like seeing a path to their future.
16. Do you have any more personal story to tell?
I have a funny story to tell. Near the end of the trip, we still had about $ 1,250 of Random Acts and I'd save it for our next trip, but a big chance came.
We were at a meeting of school construction in presenting tools and other materials to the president of Jacmel as well as other members representing the city. They thanked us and we pass to the speeches and we were operating trying to figure out how they would transport students to and from school. Finally here I am, your regional representative of the Region 8: Western Europe.
My name is Christina, or Chris (Hakuna) and I'm here to help you and give you support in your desire to perform acts of kindness in your regiãoe towards your next.
As you may have noticed the Region 8 is different from other regions of Random Acts, with regard to language. In our region there are different countries with different natures, tempers and languages, and because we do not want this to be a barrier for those willing to intervene we ask friends to translate all official documents, if necessary, to go vacation languages. For that I also have an ambitious French assistant (Ally) who is waiting for all your questions concerning problems of French department. If any of you have problems to see the posts or problems with the English language in general can contact me or my assistant and we will help you to understand all the ways in as possible. Do not hesitate or be ashamed to ask because if a person has trouble realizing there are certainly many more ambitious and we find translators in all languages of our region if necessary.
But we also realized that some of you have some fear having to speak in English on the forum. never seems to be shortage of donations to be made or causes to help in time and around the time of festivals. Whether, a Salvation Army bell at WalMart or a "Gift Tree" in your church or workplace, there seems always accessible ways to donate to charity. And it seems that at the time of festivals, when the spirit of giving is higher, almost everyone is willing to give at least a little.
But the need does not go away with the end of parties and should not end the desire to help. The means to donate may become less visible after December, but they are always there, if they know where to look. This post will hopefully inspire us to keep alive the spirit of giving throughout the year.
The WalMart, despite all its drawbacks, is actually a very easy site to donate to a very worthy charity - The Children's Miracle Network. I've seen the donation boxes placed randomly in all that I've been in WalMart. Sometimes they are simply large containers blue, but more frequent until they are some kind of game (for which children are immediately attracted.) An aquarium filled with water and wine glasses and can see the money to float and try to land one of those cups. believe that this is my first post in 2011. Three weeks ago we started the new year, but I thought we could still take some time to look ahead and reflect on what this might mean for years nose to where we could go together.
I look to 2011 with great hope, my dear friends, because I believe that the small jobs that we have made an impact. They are like waves on water, you do not see much at first but then it can be seen how much they walked and how it can prolong a coast far.
Our random acts do the same thing when we do a kindness to someone, it makes waves. This person feels better, more compassionate and pass it to others in ever-widening circle of caring that makes the world a little better for everyone. And if many of NOSO do? We have the power to change our world in a positive way that is extremely powerful.

Firstly, congratulations to everyone for 2011. Let this be the year to achieve your dreams! I firmly believe in making New Year's resolutions. The beginning of a new year is a great time to consider past behaviors, current situation and future plans. I try to make new resolutions throughout the year and remember the less fortunate.
However, the more likely it is that in January 2011 did not go to meet your expectations, dreams and hopes. Who has not started the new year with a handful of New Year's resolutions?! Philip, a friend of Misha, with 14 volunteers went to Haiti last October to bring them assistance and funds harvested by Random Acts. He tells us here how was the trip, and how your money was spent generously.
1. How did you get involved with three orphanages in Haiti?
When the earthquake struck Haiti in January, my wife is a teacher of yoga immediately contacted an international aid organization to see how she could help. She felt better able to help by teaching yoga to rescuers to help manage stress, and the teacher to the Haitians, orphaned and homeless, to help their body and mind heal. She was finally on site in May and has worked with many slums and orphanages. She has done everything to move rubble to play with the orphans, teach yoga to work with the Red Cross and the United Nations. When she was there, she has taken a liking to a few orphanages and NGOs who thought up a school to teach Haitians how to build houses with means anti-seismic . Upon her return, she told me wanting to organize a volunteer trips to San Francisco and back there to help the orphanages and the creation of this school. We organized the trip for October with 14 volunteers mobilized to teach yoga, do volunteer work in orphanages and help raise funds to begin construction of the school.
2. Can you tell us where the orphanages? Are they in villages or cities? Are they rural?
Orphanages are in the rural town of Jacmel, a community of artists around 4am south of Port-au-Prince. It was a coastal tourist area but has been severely affected by the earthquake. There are many slums there.
3. What is the current status of each orphanage?
One orphanage provides shelter, food and education to 82 children, and is currently building a dental clinic on his property. This is the only dental clinic in Jacmel (the other was destroyed by the earthquake), and they hope that some of the revenue generated will help finance the orphanage. The clinic will employ a whole and that of Jacmel Haiti. Some funds from the race went Misha the clinic, and we had several days to help Haitians digging foundations and pouring concrete. They hope to finish by the end of the year.
The other orphanage is not yet quite an orphanage. It's a big building run by an amazing woman named Bonito Afrian. Each day it opens its doors to 225 children, giving them a lunch and educates. Many of these children walk for almost an hour for the only meal they have during the day, then they walk another hour to return to their tent where some of them have no parents but only brothers and sisters. Skipjack has an extensive network of donations in Brooklyn, NY, who sent him clothes and medicines to help clothe and care for children when they come for their meals. Some funds from the race Misha was used to repair damage and build a covered shelter for the children not to eat under a blinding sun. Her dining room is too small for all children, third of them are outside in very hot temperatures. The shelter, now closed, is a real support to dozens of children. The last investment of money for Random Acts is the construction of a school, started by an NGO (CIDA VOCA). The school, which serves 40 young men and women orphaned in the quake, teaches them for 4 months to build homes for quake-resistant standards. The Random Acts of money has been incredibly well used there (and that's where most has been spent). These étudaints develop skills they can reuse. In fact, students which began this semester and already have jobs waiting for them when they will graduate in January. In addition, they build a better future in Haiti with Better Homes.
The NGOs had difficulty raising money to buy tools for students, or bring them to school because Conteners are blocked at Port- au-Prince. Two weeks before we left, they asked us if we could take a few more tools in our suitcases for help because some students have none. As a result, we each had a suitcase filled with more layers (for orphanages) of screwdrivers, hammers, pipes, scotch, and other tools. We finally carry 750 pounds (340kg) of tools in 15 large suitcases. It was amazing to go through customs and to have their head when they opened our bags and found layers and screws. They thought we were doing the smuggling, but when they saw our destination, they smiled and let us pass.
4. What is the current situation in Haiti?
Port-au-Prince, madness! There is rubble everywhere and the unemployment rate is very high. And with very few people going to school, the future will be problematic. That said, the most amazing thing that my wife and I have noticed is how people are full of love, hope and gratitude. If we do not know, we have no idea they are in the midst of a national disaster (earthquake, flood, cholera). It is the most beautiful and spiritual culture that I've ever seen.
5. Misha told the story of the man who helped you buy the materials from Home Depot, the fact that he was Haitian and had lost his family. Is what you could tell us about that? It is there other stories you'd like to share?

The other orphanage is not a real orphanage. There is a large outdoor area of a very wonderful woman named Bonite Afriane is passed. The orphanages are in a rural place called Gelg Jacmel, an artists' commune, about four hours south of Port-au-Prince. The place was formerly a tourist resort on the coast, but it is hard hit by the earthquake. There are several tent cities.
third In the condition of the orphanages right now?
One orphanage housed, cared for and taught about 82 children and one is in the process of building a dental clinic on the property. It is the only dental clinic in all of Jacmel (the other was destroyed by the earthquake), and the operators hope that the revenue can fund from the orphanage in part. The clinic is designed to benefit all Jacmel and set only Haitian. Some of the donations from Misha's Run have been used for material for this dental clinic, and we spent several days in order to help the Haitians in the process of laying the foundation. The hope is that it finished by the end of the year.
The other orphanage is not a real orphanage. There is a large outdoor area of a very wonderful woman named Bonite Afriane is passed. Every day she opens the door 225 children to provide them with a hot meal and to teach them. Many the children bring a walk of about an hour behind for the only meal they get all day. Then they run back to their tents, where some of them living without parents but with their siblings. Bonite has a strong support network in Brooklyn, NY, from which it gets sent clothes and medicine to enable it to sending you the children who come to dinner with her, both to provide clothing and medical care. It is often referred to as the Mother Teresa of Jacmel. We spent some days in this center and helped provide the children with food, played with them and helping to sort clothes and medicine.
